Description
We present a case study on the closure and demolition of the former Wittenoom townsite located within the largest contaminated site in the southern hemisphere. The demolition was the culmination of thirty years of effort by the State to minimize environmental health impacts. The town’s surrounding rugged beauty and supporting infrastructure was a constant draw card for the public who appeared oblivious to the environmental health impacts of wandering through the abandoned town and Gorge. The case study details measures taken to deliver safe outcomes during the demolition and in-situ burial of more than 7,000 m3 of asbestos contaminated waste.
