In 2018, we developed a unique two-year Graduate Environmental Health Officer Training Program consisting of on the job training with concurrent study of a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health. This program was evaluated by conducting semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The evaluation identified capacity building for the environmental health workforce as a key strength and enablers consisted of high level of support for trainees with exposure to a variety of work. The program could be improved by clearer awareness and understanding of the trainee role across all levels of health to promote future uptake of the traineeship.
