The Total Solar Eclipse event in April 2023 attracted 20,000 people to the remote town of Exmouth in Western Australia. The anticipated population surge raised environmental health concerns with access to water and food, accommodation, crowd safety, virus transmission and waste management. The Department of Health WA implemented various measures to manage environmental health risks including appointment of a Public Health Officer on the cross-agency project control group, developing an Environmental Health Risk Scoping tool, establishing a Local Government Environmental Health Officer Working Group, completing Public Health Readiness Assessment and deployment of Authorised Officers during the event.
