Description

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is a common cause of salmonellosis notified in Western Australia (WA). SE infections are mostly acquired overseas, and local transmission is uncommon. Using epidemiological, environmental, and genomic surveillance data, we describe the epidemiology of SE in WA from 2018 to 2023 including the detection of a probable foodborne outbreak comprising four locally-acquired SE cases associated with a Perth food venue. Ongoing surveillance of SE remains important to better understand the epidemiology of SE infections notified in WA, identify potential animal reservoirs, and prevent transmission of SE in chicken flocks that may cause future outbreaks.
