Description
The safety and quality of food donated to Australian food banks is unknown. A visual inspection of the 86,050 kilograms (kg) of donated food was undertaken during a 5-day audit. Four percent (3761kg) of food donated was unsuitable for human consumption. These donations, predominantly from supermarkets included product recalls, expired salami, contaminated and mouldy food. The audit also found 27% (23,092kg) by weight the food was poor and unsuitable for meals. The quality and safety of food donations across the food banking system remains largely unmonitored and requires urgent reform, particularly due to the vulnerability of the end user.
