Description

Australian First Nations remote communities have one of the highest rates of strongyloidiasis in the world. The disease is caused by a gastrointestinal parasite, and is transmitted by contact with faeces – as a result of poorly constructed and/or poorly maintained housing, and poor environmental health hardware (toilets, laundries, wastewater systems, rubbish collection) and possibly dog faeces. Here I present research into the environmental reservoirs of the parasite, and argue that an environmental health-focused approach would be better at eliminating strongyloidiasis than clinical intervention.
