Description

Following the emergence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in Australia in 2022, the Western Australia (WA) Department of Health initiated mosquito trapping in proximity to piggeries and high-risk wetlands, sentinel chicken and feral pig surveillance, and JEV testing of human patients with community-acquired encephalitis/meningitis. In March 2023, two seropositive feral pigs were detected in the Kimberley, using a plaque reduction neutralisation assay. Shortly after, 6 sentinel chickens from the Kimberley (Kununurra, Wyndham Halls Creek) and Pilbara (Newman) regions were also confirmed seropositive. Despite screening of >4,000 mosquito pools, JEV has not yet been detected in mosquitoes or humans in WA.
