Description

The Western Australian (WA) Public Health Act 2016 requires Local Governments (LGs) to protect community health. The WA Food Act 2008 requires LGs to register premises handling food. WA LGs require current and reliable data to visually map and analyse food environments for public health planning. A cross-sectional audit of food businesses registered with 32 metropolitan WA LGs was conducted in 2022. A classification framework was developed and applied to 15761 food businesses. A total of 9069 food retail (n=2906) and food service (n=6163) outlets were identified; including chains (n=2578). Analysis presented can inform LG public health planning priorities.
