The main objective of this study was to gain a deeper insight into the professional development of PEH professionals in Slovenia and to determine the required professional knowledge and skills. A total of 332 respondents participated. Most of them are employed in their profession, half hold a leadership position. The fields of employment have expanded over the last decade. Of the 22 specialties, internal hygiene control, epidemiology and education and/or research were the three most frequently mentioned. Limited career opportunities, management positions and employment in the private sector require special attention and also adaptation of formal and lifelong learning programmes.
